What is SEO / Search Engine Optimization?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is generally THE element in the online marketing mix that receives the most attention. It is a sub-specialty of SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and used to provide search engines will all of the factors relevant and necessary to achieving a higher ranking in organic search results. The sometimes complex algorithms used by search engines give rise to an elaborate set of requirements and optimization approaches for websites themselves (on-page), as well as the elements around them (off-page => link structure).
When optimizing a website, one of the key challenges of SEO is to identify the keywords that will drive a site’s success.
SEO can be broadly divided into two main key focal points, one of which is off-page optimization. At present, it is still the quality and quantity of a website’s backlinks, i.e. links to your website on other websites, that are essential for achieving a high to very high ranking for a website.
The other key focal point of SEO is on-page optimization, which is about the way search engines analyze a website’s content, its meta tags (title tags!), as well as the configuration of its content and structure. It includes optimizing all of the elements that make for a good website – from its page speed (loading time), to its joy-of-use (user experience / usability) and architecture. And that is NOT with a view to optimizing a website for search engines, but to maximize user experience.
